Flick Off the Switch

When the world began the only thing to light our way were the stars at night and the sun in the day. It sounds pretty romantic, but in reality, if we were faced that situation today we would have to drastically change our lifestyle. Fortunately for us, and maybe unfortunately for the planet, fire was soon discovered as a source of light and heat, and electricity eventually followed that…

Although electricity has meant huge advancements in the area of technology which have drastically improved our standard of living, it (along with other forms of energy such as petrol) have been a curse for our beloved Mother Earth. Because a lot of electricity is made by burning fossil fuels, it not only uses up a non-renewable source, but it also creates greenhouse gasses that contribute to global warming. Fortunately other ways of creating electricity, such as wind farms and solar power, and these are being used, and new technologies such as geo-thermal energy are being developed, but currently these renewable sources cannot create all of the energy that our population demands.

With the predicament that our world is in, Mother Nature can do with any help that we can give her. Most of us are not in a position to create boundless amounts of green energy or develop new sustainable ways of procuring energy, but there is something practical that we can do without really even inconveniencing us: that is to turn off any power points that we don’t need. If you leave a room, turn the light off. Turn your TV and other appliances off at the wall instead of just pushing the button. Embrace Earth Hour. Just small things that we can get into the habit of doing can help us to save our precious Earth.

Some words of wisdom from High School Musical: 'We’re all in this together' – if our earth dies we die with her too, but if she lives and prospers so will we.

Peace Out
